Across decades and disciplines, my writing has explored human affect, cognition, motivation, and behavior. As a child, some of my earliest prize-winning writing pieces concerned joy and consciousness. This presaged a lifelong passion and curiosity about how we think, feel, and behave; this curiosity crosses disciplinary boundaries, levels of analysis, methods of inquiry, and styles of writing.
My articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, along with select other scholarly publications, can be found on Google Scholar. These works span different segments of the translational spectrum in psychology, neuroscience, and health. They primarily consider topics in behavioral medicine (e.g., health behavior change) and behavioral health (e.g., depression, substance use), with particular focus on how neural, cognitive, and behavioral reward processes are associated with health. They include laboratory-based fMRI and cognitive assessments, longitudinal trials of behavioral interventions to promote healthy dietary patterns and physical activity, as well as an encyclopedia chapter on health behavior change interventions.
My business writing has largely focused on workforce and societal behavioral health, motivation and performance at work, and how people use technology to understand the world and pursue their goals. Most of it has been proprietary and is thus not publicly available. However, 3 collaboratively written pieces on mental health from my time in what is now the McKinsey Health Institute can be accessed here, here, and here.
Creative writing has been a lifelong pursuit. Current projects include essays and a work of fiction. Notes of gratitude are a preferred literary form.
